One-Horned Lion
From Foshan folklore, it is said that in the early years of the Ming Dynasty, there was a monster in Foshan, with a head as big as a bucket, long horns on the top, glowing eyes, and a mouth like a basin, which endangered people all over the place. In order to subdue the beast, some people came up with a "strange to make strange" approach, asked the local ZhaZhuo artists with bamboo strips braided into a head with a unicorn horn, two eyes protruding, wide ears and a broad nose, open a bloody mouth, body painted with colorful patterns, the image of a very fierce one-horned lion, when the beast appeared, the crowd will be banging gongs, drums, firecrackers, dancing one-horned lion rushed to the beast, and sure enough! It scared it away. Since then, the unicorn lion has been widely spread in the folklore, and during festivals, people will dance the lion to celebrate and pray for protection from evil spirits. Decorating the Unicorn Lion on the spine (of traditional buildings) also has the same meaning of warding off evil spirits and keeping people safe.
